Beginner Guide: Shaman
The Spirit Guide
This guide was created in part based on Quivo’s beginner video for Shamans.
Why play a Shaman?
Shamans are the pro-active healers of Monsters & Memories. They rely heavily on healing-over-time spells to keep their group members alive, though they do have access to a single target heal as well.
Shamans are also incredibly strong at both buffing their group’s physical abilities and de-buffing their enemies. Tribal Spirit increases your group members’ physical stats, Pact of Haste increases their melee attack speed and Communion of Regeneration increases their health regeneration. Ancestral Wisdom is also available as a self-buff, which increases your Wisdom stat, health regeneration and allows you to see invisible entities and magical effects. There is even a special version of this ability which also transforms you into a bear.
Shamans also have access to several movement speed buffs. Speed of Predator for yourself, and Speed of the Wild and Speed of the Pack for your single targets and your group respectively.
Omen of Lethargy reduces enemy attack speed, Omen of Enfeeblement reduces enemy physical stats, Omen of Susceptibility reduces enemy resistances to Disease, Holy and Magic.
To keep themselves in the fight, Shamans can use the Consume skill to convert a portion of their own health into mana.
Shamans primarily rely on damage-over-time spells to do damage, and kiting when playing solo. These spells stack with the damage-over-time spells from other Shamans, so it is no detriment to have several Shamans in a group.
Should things go awry, Shamans have the strongest escape/reset spell in the game in the form of Ritual of Escape. This spell sends your entire group to the spirit realm where they will become invisible, reset all threat and regenerate health and mana.
In closing, pick Shaman if you are interested in a pro-active healer with a relaxed play-style. Your primary purpose in groups will be to buff your group members, maintain both healing-over-time and damage-over-time, as well as de-buffing enemies each pull.

Starter Quest: Night Habor
Before we begin: You can always reference what NPCs have told you by accessing your journal (default key: J) and you can always ask follow up questions to them by simply targeting them and writing in Say chat, as if they were players. For instance: “Where can I find [key word]?”
A full list of beginner tips can be found [here].
Open your inventory and memorize any spells you might’ve started with, then read the Hastily Scrawled Note.
Directions to: Errol Shrewtender
From the North Gate, turn right and follow the path through the large gate with a floating pink crystal above it. Follow the stairs down and pass through the keyhole arch and take the first possible left and head down the stairs into Saltbreeze Park. Once at the bottom, do a 180-degree turn and follow the wall of the park, passing by the gate towards the necropolis and along the smaller wall until you can ascend a small ramp. The Seekers of the Lost Eye will then be to your left. Once inside, turn right and head up the ramp.
Give Errol Shrewtender the scroll in your inventory and he will tell you to speak to Masoumeh Akhtar.
Directions to: Masoumeh Akhtar
She is standing literally next to him.
Hand her the Uncured Spirit Pouch and she will ask you to collect several items:
- 2 bone chips from skeletons
- 1 fire beetle gland from fire beetles
- 1 Moon Dew Moss
Location of: Skeletons, Fire Beetles and Moondew Moss
Return to Seabreeze Park and exit through the main entrance of the park and continue straight down the cobblestone road until you exit Night Harbor through the West Gate. Outside you will find skeletons and fire beetles, as well as the well where the Moondew Moss grows. The well is diagonally to the left once you exit the city and near some palm trees.
To collect the moss, use the command “/take moss” at night.
Once you have all three items, place them within the Uncured Spirit Pouch and press combine, then return to the Seekers of the Lost Eye and hand the bag to Masoumeh.

From where you spawned in, you will see a ramp, possibly leading up to a round hut. This is the “noob lift.” It is an elevator that will take you into the city proper. Walk inside and left-click the small bell hanging from a branch near the door.
At the top of the lift, take an immediate left and wrap around across the rope bridge. Once across, turn right and head up the curved ramp, then head straight to the Well of Order. From there turn right and cross another rope bridge, turn left up a large curved ramp. Once upstairs, take the right path and cross the Traders Terrace to the rope bridge on the other side. Cross the rope bridge and turn left, towards the signpost. Turn right down the rope bridge to the Balanced Branch.
Hand Varilis Thornvine the Folded Leafscroll and he will give you an Old Mortar & Pestle.
Interaction with: Varilis Thornvine
“What task?”
“What disturbances?”
He will then ask you to collect the following items:
- 4 bone chips
- 2 skulls
Location of: Skeletons
Skeletons can be found in and around the area where you started, so retract your steps back down and turn right once down on the ground. At the fork in the road, turn right and you should see skeletons on your right. This is not the only place they can spawn, just one of the closest.
Place the bone chips and skulls inside the Old Mortar & Pestle and combine. Return to Varilis and hand him the Mortar of Bone Dust.
Interaction with: Varilis Thornvine
“I cannot hear the cries”
“I understand.”
He will direct you to investigate a wolf den to the west and hand you a Pouch of Bone Dust.
TIP: A Beastmaster can cast Invisibility versus Beasts on you to make this next part a bit easier.
Directions to: Wolf Den (from Varilis Thornvine)
The wolf cave can be found by heading back to the Traders Terrace and going up the large curved ramp. Once at the top, cross the first rope bridge on the left and then turn left again, cutting through Sentinels Gaze and down the rope bridge on the other side. On the platform blow will be an elevator slightly to the left. Ride it down and turn left once you exit. Continue along the ledge, past the mushroom ring and sticking to the lower path. Cross the bridge and stick to the right as you venture past the ruins, continue along until you near the cave.
Interaction with: Wolf Den
Pick up the Pouch of Bone Dust from your inventory.
“/throw dust”
Kill the faerie that spawns and loot the Strange Toadstool from its corpse.
Return to Varilis and hand him the Strange Mushroom along with your Novice Hoop of the Listener, which he will upgrade. He will tell you that perhaps the mushroom can reveal a clue to you.
Interaction with: Varilis Thornvine
“What sort of clue?”
“What whispers?”
