A New Companion (Mount)
It's like a boat but for land
A New Companion
Movement speed has always been an important aspect of Dark Age of Camelot. Mainly in RvR but with how raids work in the game, speed is imperative for making it in time to get your dragon scales or joining that CL5 raid before they move out.
Note that mounts are only available on Live and Eden. On Eden mounts cannot be used in the frontiers.
Your first mount
Starting at level 20, you can begin a short quest which rewards you with a basic mount. The quest is called “A New Companion” and is picked up from within your realm’s capital city, from the Royal Stable Master near the stables:
Albion
Hibernia
Midgard
From here you are off to deliver Unrefined Materials to the old royal stable master, who is enjoying his retirement out in the realm.
On Albion, Artus is located in the tower in the northwestern corner of Salisbury Plains, a bit down the road from West Downs.
To get there, you can either exit Camelot to the south towards Cotswold village and from there grab a dragonfly ticket to West Downs and, once you land, continue west along the road to reach the watchtower. Or you can talk to a Channeler and have them send you to Caer Ulfwych in Campacorentin Forest. From there you can buy a dragonfly ticket to West Downs and jump off when you pass by the watchtower.
Ascend the tower and hand Artus the Unrefined Materials, then head back to the Royal Stable Master in Camelot, who will reward you with a Standard Chestnut Horse.
On Hibernia, you are off to see Canach, who now lives inside an old tree just west of the village of Ardagh.
To get there, either exit Tir na Nog towards Mag Mell or talk to a Channeler and have them send you directly there. From Mag Mell, grab a horse ticket to Howth and jump off you pass by Ardagh.
The old tree is just across the road a short ways into the forest and has an emerald green door. Once Canach has given you the Finished Bridle, return to the Royal Stable Master in Tir na Nog to receive your Standard Grey Horse.
On Midgard, Gnalin has decided to spent retirement in the (mostly) abandoned Blodfelag bandit settlement in the center of West Svealand.
To get there, talk to a Channeler and have them send you to Vindsaul Faste. From there, exit to West Svealand and buy a griffon ticket towards the town of Huginfell.
When passing by the two small lakes just north of Huginfell, jump off in between them. Then cut across the zone to the west until you reach Gnalin’s dubious retirement spot. Midgard’s quest is the only one where you have to get close to enemies, so if you are doing this quest at level 20, mind where you go.
Once Gnalin has the Unrefined Materials and you have the Finished Bridle, return to Jordheim and pick up your Standard Black Horse.
Equipping your mount
To equip your mount, both to make it useable and with saddlebags and armour, either use the “/mount” command or go to your Attributes panel and press the “Mount” button in the bottom right.
Drag and drop your newly acquired mount into the “Active” slot. From here you can drag it onto your bars and press that icon in order to mount up.
A standard mount will moves at the same speed as what Hasteners can provide. Swift mounts move at the same speed as Minstrels/Bards/Skalds. How to acquire a Swift mount will be covered further down.
The two slots to the right are, as they say, for armour and barding, both of which can be made with metalworking and clothworking respectively.
The four slots below are used for four saddlebags: Front left and front right, back left and back right. They can be made with leathercrafting. Each saddlebag will appear as a bag icon on the right and the four slots indicate the four spaces that each saddlebag has.
To equip a saddlebag, right-click it in your inventory and write “/use” or press your Use command.
Acquiring & Upgrading Mounts
Near the Royal Stable Master who you picked up the basic mount quest from you will also find the Royal Horse Trader, who will sell you a variety of Swift mounts, as well as the Swift Tack item which is used in creating exotic Swift mounts.
| Swift Black Bright Horse | 10 platinum |
| Swift Brown Horse | 10 platinum |
| Swift Brown Spotted Horse | 10 platinum |
| Swift Cream White Horse | 10 platinum |
| Swift Dark Brown Horse | 10 platinum |
| Swift Mare Horse | 10 platinum |
| Swift Milk White Spotted Horse | 10 platinum |
| Swift Prairie Horse | 10 platinum |
| Swift White Spotted Horse | 10 platinum |
| Swift Tack | 15 platinum |
If you want something a bit more exotic, then it is possible to get mounts as drops. They are fairly easy to get, having about a 1% drop chance.
Note that enemies still have to be at least green to you in order to drop loot at all.
Finding out which enemies drop mounts is really easy: If it looks like a horse, it can drop a horse. Typically this drop will be the same model as the horse it came from, however ones that share models, such as unicorns, can have drops of different colours, i.e. a black unicorn enemy can drop a brown unicorn horse. The exception being white unicorns who are glowing white unicorns, not just regular unicorns.
Not all horses are available across all realms however.
