Beginner Guide: Paladin
The righteous crusader
Paladin
Why play a Paladin?
Who doesn’t want to be the heavily armoured knight that champions truth and justice, and wields the light of the gods to protect the weak and heal the sick?
As a Paladin, you will be the anchor of the group. With access to a good deal of utility, as well as healing, you will be able to help stabilize your group should things go awry.
Restorative Smite and Lay on Hands will help you stay in the fight for longer. Healing Touch, Cure Disease and Cure Poison will let you take some of the pressure off your healers.
Stun, Blind, Root and Shield Slam will help you control the enemies, making sure that every fight is in your favour.
You will eventually even have access to Resurrection spells that are almost as powerful as the Cleric’s.
Combined, all of this can make for a very flexible tank that is able to adapt to just about any situation.
Some things that might make you reconsider playing a Paladin is that it is not a high damaging class, it has too much utility. You’re not as specialized as say the Inquisitor who is a dedicated Anti-Mage style tank or the Fighter who is great at dealing with physical attacks.
Playing solo as a Paladin is generally considered to be extremely safe but also extremely slow.
Depending on what you are after, Paladin might be considered to have a slow play-style for you, requiring a more methodical approach. If things go bad, you will need to make use of your crowd controlling abilities quickly, but also in the correct manner.
In closing, pick Paladin if you’re not looking to be the star of your group until things start to go wrong and it is time to save the day, or if you want to be the righteous crusader against the undead.
Starter Quest: Night Harbor
Enter the city through the West Gate and turn down the street immediately on the left. You will pass by the inn and then the bank on your right. Continue along through the arch in front of you and turn left as soon as you enter the yard with the tents. At the end will be the Wayfarer’s Hospice, wherein Thibald Burlond is waiting. Hand him your Formal Note and he will ask you to see Trey Fulton in the room on the right. Hand him the Formal Note and he will send you out to find “ol’ Grimsul” at the inn.
Return the way you came until you exit the first arch and see the bank, which is the building with the white canopy roof. To the right of it is the entrance to the Shaded Bloom Inn where Halrinn Grimsul works as the bartender. Hand in the Penitent Knight’s Coin to him and he will ask you to help him out with some grain beetles in the basement. Head through the door behind Halrinn Grimsul and then down the ramp in the next room to the left. Go down the ramp and turn left, and then right.
Collect six Intact Grain Beetle Legs and place one in each slot of Halrinn’s Bag, then press combine. Return to Halrinn at the bar and hand him the bag, after which he will ask you to bring some food to Trey Fulton. When you him the food, he will trail off for a while before asking you to explore the city.
The quest-line continues from Halrinn Grimsul in the Shaded Bloom Inn, so return and speak with him. He will send you to wards The Tomb of the Last Wyrmsbane, a dungeon outside of the city, to get a Torn Cloak from the skeleton marksmen and archers inside, then you have to find Dario Numas and get his Tattered Field Pack, and finally you will need to get an Engraved Coin. It would be wise to find a group for this part of the quest-line.
The Tomb of the Last Wyrmsbane can be found by exiting the West Gate and turning right, then crossing the ruins diagonally until you reach a small camp with several burning torches outside. The dungeon is within the narrow passage in the cliff.
TIP: Paladins can learn the “Invisibility versus Undead” spell, which will be very useful within the dungeon.
Once you are inside the dungeon, continue forwards until you cross a plank covering a large pit. Turn right at the fork and then left and then left again at the end, followed by an immediate right. Continue on to the end of the corridor and then turn right, and then left. You should see a large banner and two torches with green-blue light. Head down the stairs and turn right, down another set of stairs until you reach the crossroads in front of a large room. Inside are the skeletal archers and marksmen that you need to kill for the Torn Cloak.
When you have the cloak, return to the crossroads and looking into the room with the skeletons, turn right. Go down the corridor, continuing along until you cross a bridge. Turn right at the fork and head down where you will see two braziers with blue flames. Standing between them will trigger the text prompt “You notice a glimmer from a crack in the floor.” Use the command “/take coin” to pick up the Engraved Coin.
When you have the coin, continue onwards through the door with the blue braziers. Go to the end and turn right, then turn left once you reach the larger room. Go up the ramp and you will enter another room with two blue torches, turn left here and go up the ramp and cross the bridge. In the room across the bridge is where Dario Numas will spawn. Kill him and loot his Tattered Field Pack, then place the Torn Cloak and Engraved coin within and press combine to create Troy’s Field Pack.
Return to Night Harbor and hand the field pack to Trey Fulton.
Congratulations! You are now done with the Paladin starter quest-line.
