Beginner Guide: Beastmaster
This guide was created in part based on Quivo’s beginner video for Beastmasters.
Why play a Beastmaster?
You should consider the Beastmaster if your ideal class fantasy is that of a Berserker who travels the world with his trusty animal companion, be it as He-Man and Battle Cat, Dar and Ruh, or Conan and Needle.
The Beastmaster is not a simple animal handler but fights in symbiosis with his pet. You will not only be spending your time barking orders at your pet, directing them from target to target while you heal it or contribute only 5% of the total damage with a weak bow or similar. You will of course be able to both heal and cure your pet but that is not your priority.
In groups, you will be there to do damage. This will require you to make use of your pet and its abilities, such as Invigorate Companion which resets your pets abilities, allowing them to be used again. You will also be able to provide an aura for your group which increases their Offense and Agility.
You will have some flexibility in terms of which pet you want to bring, for instance if playing solo it might be best to bring a tank to take the hits while you pummel the enemy. In groups it might be more useful to bring a pet focused on damage dealing most of the time. However, a balanced pet might be best in case your group’s composition is not ideal and a pet capable of occasionally helping out the tank will ensure your group’s success more than just additional damage.
An exciting aspect of exploration for the Beastmaster will be the discovery of new animals for your to tame.
What might dissuade you from playing a Beastmaster, is that it can require quite a bit of micromanaging. Ensuring you get the most out of your pet will require you to pay attention to its abilities as well as your own. This can make for a rather busy play-style that might not be what you are after.
On top of that comes the basic reality of owning a pet: You’re going to have to keep it fed, as well as yourself.
Starter Quest: Faelindral
As you spawn in, you will be see a round hut with walls. This is the “noob lift.” It is an elevator that will take you into the city proper. Walk inside and left-click the small bell hanging from a branch near the door.
At the top of the lift, take an immediate left and wrap around across the rope bridge. Once across, turn right and head up the curved ramp, then head straight to the Well of Order. From there turn right and cross another rope bridge, turn left up a large curved ramp. Once upstairs, take the right path and cross the large open space to the rope bridge on the other side. Cross the rope bridge and walk inside the large tree on your left through the tall, thin opening.
Inside, hand your scroll to Captain Relgen Greenblade who will send you on your way to Aerin Mossfang. Exit the tree, turn left and head towards the building with the sloped red roof. Hand the Request for Aid to Aerin Mossfang and she will ask you to bond with one of the weakened bears, wolves or the bat in the cage.
- Bear: Tank
- Wolf: Damage
- Bat: Balanced
Use the treatment kit on the pet of your choice, then immediately tame it.
Return to Aerin Mossfang and had her back the treatment kit, she will then give you a stack of six simple animal feed and a Hunt Satchel. Feed your pet before heading all the way back and down the lift.
Once downstairs turn left and follow the stone path until it reaches a bridge. Cross the bridge and turn left along the river to find the black wolf pups and black bats you need to kill in order to get six pieces of their meat. This is not the only place you can find them, just one of the closest. If there are other people here, take the right path from the lift and then left in the fork. Continue onwards until you reach a wagon and turn right. There should be more enemies there. Gather six pieces of the same kind of meat, you cannot mix and match them. Put one piece of meat into each slot of the Hunt Satchel and return to Aerin Mossfang. Hand her the satchel and she will ask you to taste the stew bubbling away in front of her. Use the “/taste stew” command to finish.
REQUIRED LEVEL: 4
Hand Aerin Mossfang your Novice Claws of the Keeper to continue the quest-line. She will ask you if you have been hunting any beasts in the forest lately, to which you will say “Yes.”
She will tell you about a sickness affecting the animals, to which you will ask “What sickness?”
She will describe it as a diseased rot that needs to be stopped before it can spread, to which you will ask: “What diseased rot?”
Aerin Mossfang will then give you a Hide Wrapping and ask you with killing four rabid wolves out in the forest. The rabid wolves can be found by taking the lift down to the surface, turning right and following the stone path until it reaches a fork. Turn left and continue along until you pass a wagon, then turn right down a stone path. Follow the path until you can take another left. The rabid wolves will be around here.
Once you have four Diseased Wolf Pelts, combine them in the Hide Wrapping to create a Bundle of Wrapped Pelts and return to Aerin Mossfang. Hand her the bundle and she will return it to you as the Bundle of Diseased Pelts and tell you to bring them to someone who “has heard the cry of the wolves.” You can ask her “Who?” and she will direct you to Eraeldor Lowmist, the Shaman trainer. To find him, leave the Beastmaster area and take the first rope bridge on the left. Eraeldor Lowmist will be up the stairs in front of you as you cross the bridge. Hand him the Bundle of Diseased Pelts and he will say that Aerin Mossfang wished you to make a demand of him. Reply with “I demand” followed by “Which direction?”
TIP: Eraeldor Lowmist can cure the Rabies debuff if you target him and say “Cleanse me.”
You will then be tasked with killing the orc Vorkuul Blighteye within the Evershade Weald and taking his head. Killing Fellstone Shaman orcs will have a chance to spawn Vorkuul Blighteye. It may take a while, so being a group can speed up the process.
Take the lift down once more and return to the vicinity of where you killed the rabid wolves. Behind the stone pillars that the wolves could be found near is where the orcs make their camps.
Once you have the orc’s head, return to Aerin Mossfang and hand her the head and the Bundle of Cleansed Pelts.
REQUIRED LEVEL: 8
Return to Aerin Mossfang and ask her “What improvements?” to continue the quest. She will tell you about a Calafreyan Beast, to which you will ask her “What is a Calafreyan Beast?” Next she will ask you to kill bears in order to collect three blood-soaked claws and a poacher’s arrow.
Take the lift down and once more head in the direction of where the rabid wolves were. Continue past them along the road until you pass through a large stone arch and zone into Keeper’s Bight. Head down the ramp and follow the dirt path, keeping your eyes open for aggressive black bears. Regular black bears will not give you the items required. If you find a Low-Quality Bear Pelts, hang onto it for now. It will be required later.
Once you have all three blood-soaked claws and the poacher’s arrow, return to Aerin Mossfang in Faelindral and hand them to her along with your Novice Claws of the Keeper. Next you will be tasked with crafting a set of claws from the materials you have gathered so far. You will need:
- 2 Rough Thread (purchased from leatherworker/tailor vendor)
- 2 Cloth Padding (combine cloth scraps at a tailoring station)
- Set of Bear Claws (from quest)
- Low-Quality Bear Pelt (drop from the bears you killed earlier)
- Novice Claws of the Keeper
Once you have everything you need, head to the leatherworking station an combine it all into a Fashioned Set of Claws. The leatherworking station can be found upstairs in the large building with the red roof in the Traders Terrace. Once you have completed your crafting, return to Aerin Mossfang and hand her the Fashioned Set of Claws.
REQUIRED LEVEL: 10(?)
For the final part of your quest-line, talk to Aerin Mossfang and ask her: “Who is my next target?” She will tell you to find the poacher that the arrow belonged to by pretending to be one of their targets. Ask her: “How will I act the part?” and she will present you with a Potion of Ursine Rage.
Make your way back to Keeper’s Bight and down the ramp again. Drink the potion once you reach the dirt road and then take an immediate left and follow the rock, crossing a smaller dirt path, until you reach a unattended camp. At the camp, use the following commands: “/smell tent” and then “/smell poacher” and finally “/rub tree”.
The poacher will have appeared a slight distance away from the camp. Fight and kill him, take his bow back to Aerin Mossfang. Hand her both the bow and the Potion of Ursine Rage to finish the quest-line.
Congratulations! You are now done with the Beastmaster starter quest-line.
