Beginner Guide: Cleric
The Servant of the Divine
This guide is based in part on Quivo’s beginner video for Clerics.
Why play a Cleric?
Because you want to be everyone’s number one choice.
Clerics are the premier healing and support class in the game, which makes them an incredibly highly sought after class. They are the strongest healer in the game, with some of the strongest utility in the game as well. Not to mention they wear plate armour, making them durable as well.
Their heals include a targeted heal, a delayed targeted heal, a cone heal and a group heal, plus a barrier spell to absorb damage.
Their utility include two fortitude buffs which increase maximum health, one of which also has a built-in emergency heal should the target fall below a certain health threshold. There is also the Prayer of the Faithful, which increases the Cleric’s strength, block chance and mana regeneration.
With all these tools at your disposal, it will be important that you learn to relax with your role, so that you can pick the correct tool for the job instead of panicking and spamming group heals. Learning the rhythm of the fight and predicting incoming damage will be crucial to choosing the correct heal.
Clerics do not perform well solo, being slow but safe unless it is against undead where they have specialized spells such as Smite the Dead. However it won’t be a problem since you’ll only ever be solo if you choose to. As in most MMOs, healers do not have long wait (or queue) times.
Being the premier healer does of course come with some drawbacks. You will often be supported in healing by a Druid or a Shaman, but as the strongest healer it is often you that is in the spotlight both when things go well and when they don’t. This is why it is important to be comfortable with the role, as being calm and collected helps you make the best decisions and allows you to be the deciding factor in many encounters.
It is generally a slow play-style for the majority of time, only getting really intense when things go wrong (which they will eventually). Mana management will be crucial in those times, so make sure you always leave some in reserve if possible.
In closing, choose Cleric if you want to play a strong healer and supporter, who instantly gets group invites and where knowledge and decision-making are integral to the role and where you can easily be the one who saves the day.
Starter Quest: Night Harbor
Before we begin: You can always reference what NPCs have told you by accessing your journal (default key: J) and you can always ask follow up questions to them by simply targeting them and writing in Say chat, as if they were players. For instance: “Where can I find [key word]?”
Open your inventory and memorize any spells you might’ve started with, then read the Formal Note. Enter Night Harbor through the West Gate near where you spawned and turn left as soon as you enter. Continue down the cobblestone road, passing by the Shaded Bloom Inn on your right and later the bank building with the tented white roof. Continue straight through the gate in front of you to the Sojourner’s Camps and turn left once you enter. Straight ahead and a bit to the left will be the Wayfarer’s Hospice. Head inside and hand your Formal Note to Thibald Burlond, who will then instruct you to seek out Jiselle Heyley upstairs.
From Thibald, turn right and head into the room with Trey Fulton, then turn left and head through the door and through the corridor and up the ramp until you reach the next level. Turn left and then another immediate left, through the small room and onto the balcony above. Jiselle is to your left. Hand her the Formal Note and she will give you a Penitent Knight’s Coin to hand to Dalinder Grammanoot next to Thibald. Return the way you came or jump down, hand Dalinder the Penitent Knight’s Coin and he will ask you to kill snakes for Immature Snake Venom Sacs.
Head outside the West Gate and kill snakes until you have six venom sacs. Place on sac in each slot of Dalinder’s Bag and press combine before returning to Dalinder and handing him the Bag of Venom Sacs. Dalinder will then give you Millicent’s List, which lists three items you must acquire for her.
- Moondew Moss (can be found around wells at night)
- Cantharidin (just wants two glands from Blister Beetle, which only spawn during the day)
- Bat Bile from a diseased bat (found outside the Tomb of the Last Wyrmsbane)
Head back outside the West Gate to find and kill the Blister Beetles. They only spawn during the day, so if they are not there, look for the Moondew Moss near the well surrounded by palm trees. Use the command “/take moss” during the night to collect the moss.
For the bat bile, you will head to the entrance of the Tomb of the Last Wyrmsbane dungeon. The Tomb of the Last Wyrmsbane can be found by exiting the West Gate and turning right, then crossing the ruins diagonally until you reach a small camp with several burning torches outside. The dungeon is within the narrow passage in the cliff. The diseased bats will be outside the crevice. Kill them until you gather an Intact Diseased Bat Bile Duct.
Return the Wayfarer’s Hospice and as soon as you enter, turn right and hand Millicent the Moondew Moss, two Blister Beetle Glands and the Intact Diseased Bat Bile Duct along with Millicent’s List and Dalinder’s Tunic. She will then reward you with the Penitent Knight’s Tunic.
Congratulations! You are now done with the Cleric starter quest-line for now.
