Beginner Guide: Archer
The Hawk-Eye
Archer
Why play an Archer?
This guide is in part based on Quivo’s beginner video for Archers.
Because every MMO needs at least 70 variations of the name Legolas to be a real MMO. It’s in the rules somewhere, trust me.
Archers are pure ranged physical damage dealers who make use of the Tinkering tradeskill to create special traps. The currently available traps are:
- Alarm Trap: Notifies you of any enemies that enter the trap’s area
- Immobilizing Trap: Roots the enemy in place
- Oil Trap: Creates an oil spill which can be detonated with Flare, causing an explosion
- Poison Gas Trap: Damage-over-time
Archers are a fairly straight forward class. They are however unique in that they start with a special trait called “High Ground” which increases your damage by ~5% while you are above your target. This can create make combat encounters a bit more interesting in that, to play at your optimum, you should always be on the lookout for an elevated position from which to shoot.
As a ranged player, you are given a decent amount of safety simply because you can stay out of melee range. In fact, you are encouraged to since there is a dead zone where, if an enemy is within melee range of you, you cannot use the majority of your bow attacks.
Your Alarm Trap can provide a bit of utility for your group, giving early warning of any approaching patrols from behind or notify you of re-spawns.
If you’re able to kite enemies, Archers do decently when played solo.
In a group, you are only there to do damage, which you will do a lot of. It is however all you bring, being a specialized class.
As an Archer, you do not have particularly strong melee capabilities, meaning you will be using your bow and only your bow for the grand majority of your playtime. And bows of course require arrows, of which you will use a LOT. It will therefore be prudent to pick up the Fletching skill (maybe consider taking the Fletcher trait at character creation as well) since you will most likely be spending quite a bit of time creating your own arrows.
In conclusion, choose Archer if you wish to play a straight-forward, non-magical, damage dealing class with a unique fun gameplay mechanic that also won’t leave you underperforming in your group if you cannot find higher ground.
Starter Quest: Night Harbor
Before we begin: You can always reference what NPCs have told you by accessing your journal (default key: J) and you can always ask follow up questions to them by simply targeting them and writing in Say chat, as if they were players. For instance: “Where can I find [key word]?”
Read the Notice of Recruitment in your inventory. Fedamius Steele III can be found inside the Steel Talons Garrison. From where you start, do a complete turn around and enter the garrison behind the portcullis and gate. Click on the portcullis to open it and head inside, turn right and go up the stairs. Swing around the left once you’re up and Fedamius will be right there on the rampart, overlooking the courtyard. Hand him your Notice of Recruitment and he will ask you to speak with his brother-in-law, Jacobin Yeats, who can be found downstairs in the courtyard to the right near the archery training corral.
Hand Jacobin your Notice of Recruitment and he will give you a bag to fill with four Ashira Scout Necklaces from Ashira Scouts and Lookouts, who can be found in Night Harbor near the zone walls to Shaded Dunes and Sungreet Strand, as well as inside Shaded Dunes and Sungreet Strand, just to the north as you enter either zone. Kill enough Scouts and Lookouts to get four necklaces, place on in each slot of Jacobin’s Bag and hit combine before returning to Jacobin in the garrison courtyard and handing him his bag back.
Jacobin will then ask you to fill his pack with Ashira Warrior Necklaces. Ashira Warriors can be found in the same spots as the Scouts and Lookouts. Kill enough until you have six necklaces, then place one in each slot of Jacobin’s Pack and press combine. Return to Jacobin in the garrison courtyard and hand him the pack.
Jacobin then tells you to go see Quartermaster Obaid in his office, through the door on the opposite side of the courtyard near the melee training corral. Hand Obaid Jacobin’s Note and your Steel Talon Trainee Tunic and you will be done.
Congratulations! You are now done with the Archer starter quest-line for now.
