OVERVIEW: Server Comparisons
A general overview of the three different Dark Age of Camelot servers: The official Live server and the fan-projects Eden and Blackthorn.
Here will you find an overview of the three different servers available to play on for Dark Age of Camelot. It will compare certain aspects and highly unique aspects.
LIVE
Live is Live and will be what everything is compared against. For better or for worse, it shows the game’s natural progression along official intended design. It has the most content available, with almost everything from all expansions still remaining in the game. Both of the fan-project servers are widely different from each other and from Live, representing what I see as two distinct “What if...” alternate timelines for Dark Age of Camelot.
- Third most amount of active players
- Middle ground levelling experience of the three
- Most races and classes available, most race/class combinations available
- Most amount of over-world and dungeons available
- Power creep managed through balance patches but the systems contributing most to player power increases remain
- Non-seasonal
- New content is primarily new and re-occurring events
- Server location: USA
EDEN
Eden’s “What if...” timeline is one where the developers realized their mistakes starting during Trials of Atlantis and beyond, with regards to power creep and World of Warcraft’s complete shake up of the MMORPG genre. Eden incorporates a large amount of the content available on Live, with all classes and races except the Minotaurs and the Mauler class, four of the six Trials of Atlantis dungeons and parts of later expansions available.
- Most amount of active players
- Fastest levelling experience of the three
- Second most races and classes available, second most race/class combinations available
- Second most amount of over-world and dungeons available
- Power creep curtailed through large custom reworks of secondary progression systems. Trials of Atlantis’ Artifacts are purely cosmetic now and Master Levels have been removed entirely, later classes have been extensively reworked.
- Seasonal
- Reaching either level 50 or realm rank 2L4 will ensure that your character carries over between seasons, even if not played in between two or more seasons.
- Many custom quality-of-life changes, such as siege monsters for Battlegrounds, a built-in AutoHotKey alternative, the ability to play as a realm-neutral renegade and much more
- Custom end-game group dungeons with high difficulty and high utility ROG rewards
- ROG being Random Object Generation, meaning items are generated with a mostly random assortment of stats. Higher utility allows for a larger amount of statistics on these items and these dungeons have the highest utility drops in the game. ROG items can have their statistics re-rolled to be more advantageous at NPCs within the realm’s housing zones.
- Custom PvP systems for one versus one duels, and group versus group King of the Hill style battles
- Special invasions of other realms’ homelands with unique rewards as well as other events
- Account-wide tradeskill progression
- Server location: Germany
BLACKTHORN
Blackthorn’s “What if...” timeline is one where Dark Age of Camelot saw no real expansions but instead remained a mainly classic experience with large content patches. The only official content included on Blackthorn from the game’s expansions is the races and classes from the Shrouded Isles expansion (not any of the new landmasses) and the redesigned keeps from the New Frontiers patch, which have been implemented into the Old Frontiers with some custom changes. This is in addition to a large selection of custom quality-of-life changes.
Blackthorn is, at the time of writing this overview, still in Open Beta.
- Second most amount of active players
- Slowest levelling experience of the three
- Third most races and classes available and third most amount of race/class combinations
- Least amount of over-world and dungeons available
- Power creep curtailed through custom class changes and no implementation of secondary progression systems. No artifacts (even as cosmetics), no Master Levels and no Champion Levels, and their associated rewards.
- Non-seasonal
- Many custom quality-of-life changes, such as an “auto templating” tool, being able to temporarily level your character down and much more.
- The only server which permanently uses the Old Frontiers zone layout
- Classic enemy models
- Classic level 1-5 base classes before selecting main class
- At level 5 you get to choose your definitive class, with levels 1-5 being shared between class archetypes.
- Exploration incentives
- Thidranki, commonly regarded as the best Battleground, has had its level range extended to 10-35, up from 20-24
- Cosmetics through crafting
- Server location: France
