THE CURSE OF HEL

AVAILABLE ON: Eden, Live

Long ago, when the first Norsemen arrived in the land that would eventually be called Midgard, they buried their dead in caves deep beneath the earth. One day, a young girl wise beyond her years, stumbled into her village’s burial cave and reasoned, quite rightly, that this was the domain of Hel, the queen of the underworld and daughter of the trickster god, Loki. Seeking to not anger the goddess, she prayed for her village’s safety and Hel answered. The young girl developed magical abilities unlike any seen in Midgard. Back then, there were no Spiritmasters and worship of Hel was not exactly outlawed but strongly frowned upon, and so the girl kept her magical powers secret. Later in life, she started a cult dedicated to Hel and attracted many followers. At first it was only women who were invited into the cult, these were called the Hexa, but as time passed on, the male children of these Hexa found their way into the cult and became the Warlocks. As the cult grew, they were eventually forced underground in order to maintain their secrecy and this was when they lost their connection to the world above. One day, a gravely Kobold tunnelled into their cave speaking of unknown horrors threatening to overwhelm their underground empire. Sensing the danger in the Kobold’s words, the leader of the cult decided it was time to finally reveal themselves to the people above and when they arrived at Jordheim’s gates, they quickly learned that worship of Hel was now much more common and promised to help train future Warlocks and Hexa for Midgard’s armies.

Warlocks are perhaps the most unique spell-caster in the game, with the unique ability to store “secondary” spells in rune chambers, which would then activate whenever a “primary” spell was cast, effectively casting two spells at once. Warlocks are also spell-caster/healer hybrids.

PvE:

Warlocks, like most pet-less spell-caster, fall into the “safe but slow” experience. You will frequently need to rest to recuperate your spent power and if you end up fighting more than a single enemy, you will most likely be forced to retreat. Warlocks do have an unbreakable snare spell, which would make kiting higher level enemies much easier than other spellcasters.

Warlocks specializing into the Cursing skill line will gain access to a point-blank area-of-effect damaging spell, which will provide large amounts of damage to any group. Simply allow your tank(s) to group up and secure aggro on all enemies and then unleash your destructive powers.

RvR:

Warlocks are strong duellists due to their ability to rapidly unleash several bursts of two spells per single spell cast. With life-drain spells chambered and two highly damaging bolt spells cast in rapid succession, a lot of weaker enemies will fall dead before even realising they were being attacked. Should they survive this opening barrage however, Warlocks can quickly find that their luck has turned against them.

In groups, Warlocks are typically found as either healers or bombers. They are able to cast spread heals (“smart” spell which provides the majority of its healing power to the most wounded group member first) without having to expend power. As bombers, they are the only spell-caster in the game whose point-blank area-of-effect damaging spell is not centred upon themselves but rather on their target, which gives them increased survivability by not having to get up close to the entire enemy force.
