Beginner Guide: Shaman
The pro-active healer
Beginner Guide: Shaman
This guide was created in part based on Quivo’s beginner video for Shamans.
Why play a Shaman?
Shamans are the pro-active healers of Monsters & Memories. They rely heavily on healing-over-time spells to keep their group members alive, though they do have access to a single target heal as well.
Shamans are also incredibly strong at both buffing their group’s physical abilities and de-buffing their enemies. Tribal Spirit increases your group members’ physical stats, Pact of Haste increases their melee attack speed and Communion of Regeneration increases their health regeneration. Ancestral Wisdom is also available as a self-buff, which increases your Wisdom stat, health regeneration and allows you to see invisible entities and magical effects. There is even a special version of this ability which also transforms you into a bear.
Shamans also have access to several movement speed buffs. Speed of Predator for yourself, and Speed of the Wild and Speed of the Pack for your single targets and your group respectively.
Omen of Lethargy reduces enemy attack speed, Omen of Enfeeblement reduces enemy physical stats, Omen of Susceptibility reduces enemy resistances to Disease, Holy and Magic.
To keep themselves in the fight, Shamans can use the Consume skill to convert a portion of their own health into mana.
Shamans primarily rely on damage-over-time spells to do damage, and kiting when playing solo. These spells stack with the damage-over-time spells from other Shamans, so it is no detriment to have several Shamans in a group.
Should things go awry, Shamans have the strongest escape/reset spell in the game in the form of Ritual of Escape. This spell sends your entire group to the spirit realm where they will become invisible, reset all threat and regenerate health and mana.
In closing, pick Shaman if you are interested in a pro-active healer with a relaxed play-style. Your primary purpose in groups will be to buff your group members, maintain both healing-over-time and damage-over-time, as well as de-buffing enemies each pull.
Starter quest: Night Habor
From the North Gate, turn right and follow the path through the large gate with a floating pink crystal above it. Follow the stairs down and pass through the keyhole arch and take the first possible left and head down the stairs into Saltbreeze Park. Once at the bottom, do a 180-degree turn and follow the wall of the park, passing by the gate towards the necropolis and along the smaller wall until you can ascend a small ramp. The Seekers of the Lost Eye will then be to your left. Once inside, turn right and head up the ramp to give Errol Shrewtender the scroll in your inventory.
Errol Shrewtender will tell you to speak to Masoumeh Akhtar, an easy task considering she is standing literally next to him. Hand her the Uncured Spirit Pouch and she will ask you to collect several items:
- 2 bone chips from skeletons (found outside either gate)
- 1 fire beetle gland from fire beetles (found outside either gate)
- 1 moon dew moss from the well outside the West Gate, near the Shady Dealer
- Note that the moss can only be collected during the night
To collect the moss, use the command “/take moss” and once you have all three items, place them within the Uncured Spirit Pouch. Return to the West Gate and continue straight ahead until you reach Saltbreeze Park, then return to the Seekers of the Lost Eye and hand the bag to Masoumeh Akhtar.
REQUIRES LEVEL: 4
Masoumeh Akhtar will then send you to find Eskander Akhtar, who can be found on the roof of the building you are in. From Masoumeh Akhtar, follow the ledge around the room until you reach a wall that divides the room. Cross the bridge, sticking to the left side of it until you reach the wall opposite of where you started. There on the right will be a narrow passage with a ramp up. Run all the way to the top and exit out into the open and wrap around to the right. Eskandar will be staring out over Saltbreeze Park. Hand him the Cured Spirit Pouch and he will send you to collect a Harvallen Root.
A Harvallen Root can be obtained from the Ashira Shamans in the Shaded Dunes. Exit out the West Gate and continue straight along the cobblestone road until you enter Shaded Dunes. Turn right as soon as you enter the zone and continue forward until you see a small camp some tents.
Tip: The Ashira can drop bracers and tails, which you can give to Old Ranky in the leatherworking area of Night Harbor for extra experience.
Kill the Ashira Shamans until you get the root, then return to Eskander Akhtar at the roof of the Seekers of the Lost Eye building within Saltbreeze Park and hand him the Harvallen Root and Cured Spirit Pouch. Eskander Akhtar will give you a Purified Entheogenic Powder, which you will hand back to him when you reach level eight.
REQUIRES LEVEL: 8
Hand the Purified Entheogenic Powder back to Eskander Akhtar, who will directly you to head back downstairs to Errol Shrewtender and hand him the powder as well. Errol Shrewtender will task you with gathering four items:
- Duskglow Pod (can only be found at night)
- Grave Dust (found within the Tomb of the Last Wyrmsbane dungeon)
- Deepglow Mushroom (found within Tel Ekir, may require help to get)
- Powdered Selenite (from Foreman Stonehammer in Sungreet Strand)
In order to find each item, you can ask Masoumeh Akhtar for directions by simply chatting to her as if she were a player, i.e. simply writing in Say chat “Where is the Deepglow Mushroom?” and so on, to which she will give you a general area to search in. This kind of information can then later be viewed in your quest journal.
First is the Duskglow Pod.
Exit the West Gate and turn slightly left towards the ocean. Keep going until you enter Shaded Dunes, then continue down towards the shoreline. Follow the shoreline for quite a while until you arrive at the Smuggler’s Camp, then turn right along the river and follow it until it reaches a large stone outcropping. Walk around the outcropping on the right and you will reach the oasis. At night, use the command “/take pod” to pick up the Duskglow Pod.
Next is the Deepglow Mushroom.
For this you will need to head to Tel Ekir, the hidden Ashira sanctum. From the oasis, head up onto the sand dunes nearby and find the ruins partially swallowed by the same. Head towards the left most pillars (one of the pillars will be lodged in the sand diagonally) and head towards them. Once at the ruins, stick to the left along the mountain cliff face. You will find a small passage that appears to be blocked off by a large amount of sand. Walk towards it and you will be able to phase through the sand illusion. Continue through the valley until you reach the large open area, cross the open area towards the Ashira banner and path carved into the stone. At the end you will zone into Tel Ekir.
At the first fork in the road, take a right. You will see a small Ashira fort carved into the rockface. The Deepglow Mushroom is found within this fort. Walk through the arch and head straight, then turn right. Continue along the right wall until you reach a narrow passage with a small square opening on the left hand side. Pass through the cavern, taking the second right turn towards an area with a waterfall. Continue along, hugging the right wall as you go, until you reach a small passage on the right just before the small lake with the waterfall. Head inside and in the first alcove on the right will be where to use the command “/take mushroom” to pick up the Deepglow Mushroom.
The next item is Grave Dust.
TIP: Shamans can learn the “Invisibility versus Undead” spell, which will be very useful within the dungeon.
It can be found within the Tomb of the Last Wyrmsbane dungeon. The dungeon can be found by exiting the West Gate and turning right, then crossing the ruins diagonally until you reach a small camp with several burning torches outside. The dungeon is within the narrow passage in the cliff.
Continue through the passage until you reach the dungeon, then continue through the dungeon, crossing the wooden plank and turning right immediately after. Then take a left not long after, continue forwards and then take another left and then an immediate right. Continue on towards the end, then turn right and immediately turn left and you should see a banner and two blue-green glowing torches. Head down the stairs and turn left down the stairs, continue on until you reach a crossroads and then turn right down the ramp. Continue on until you reach the end, then turn right and continue on until you reach a small alcove with three tombs. Use the “/take dust” command to get the Grave Dust, then return to Night Harbor.
The final item is Powdered Selenite.
From Night Harbor’s North Gate, follow the cobblestone road until you reach Sungreet Strand. Continue folloing along the path for quite a while, you will eventually see the quarry on your left hand side. Head down into the quarry, down the ramp, jumping onto the ledge on the left and following it all the way around until you get to the foreman’s camp. Hand him the Order for Selenite and he will ask you to help him out first.
Foreman Stonehammer will ask you to retrieve his battered canteen from the Goblin Sneaks who can be found all around the quarry. Take care not to aggro the beetles who are also spread around the quarry. Once you have the battered canteen, return it to Foreman Stonehammer who will give you the Selenite in return, then the make your way back Night Harbor and speak to Errol Shrewtender. Hand him the Duskglow Pod, Grave Dust, Deepglow Mushroom and Powdered Selenite. He will then give you your final task: To recover the Ancient Painted Urn.
First, combine the Shimmering Slurry with the Purified Ethnogenic Powder inside the Blessed Spriit Pouch to make a Muddy Elixier of Becoming. Hand the Elixir to Errol Shrewtender, then to Masoumeh Akhtar. Masoumeh will tell you a grave robber named Ariblast.
TIP: Shamans can learn the “Invisibility versus Undead” spell, which will be very useful within the dungeon.
Ariblast can be found within the Tomb of the Last Wyrmsbane. Back in the dungeon, continue along until you cross the wooden board covering a pit, then turn right and then left. Continue to the end, then turn left and immediately right. Continue to the end, then turn right and immediately left. You will then see the banner and two blue-green torches again. Head down the stairs and then turn right and down another set of stairs. Before the large open room, turn right and cross the brdige and turn right at the end. Go down the ramp until you reach the floor below the bridge with the two blue braziers. Turn left here and then another immediate left, go up the ramp until you reach a small room. Go up the ram in this room and wrap around on the left until you reach the platform near the start of the ramp. There will be three skeletons here: A fighter, a marksman and a warrior. Kill the marksman repeatedly until Ariblast spawns, then kill him.
Once you have the urn, hand it in along with the Muddy Elixir of Becoming to Errol Shrewtender back at the Seekers of the Lost Eye in Night Harbor.
Congratulations! You are now down with the Shaman starter quest-line.
