Housing
With the Foundations update in 2003, Dark Age of Camelot was one of the first MMORPGs to add player housing, coming in third just after Ultima Online and Asheron’s Call.
Each realm has nine housing zones with 200 plots in each, for a grand total of 1800 plots. Each plot starts with sale price of tens of platinum and reducing by one platinum per hour until finally settling at a minimum price of 300 gold.
Vacant plots can easily be found via the “/house vacant” command or by looking at the Eden website’s Bestiary and selecting your realm’s housing zones. Vacant plots will appear as green houses.
The Bestiary method has the added bonus of showing the current price of the plot as well.
Once you have found a vacant plot, it is a simple matter of first purchasing the land and then adding a building. There are four types of buildings you can place down:
| SIZE | PRICE |
|---|---|
| Cottage | 1 platinum |
| House | 10 platinum |
| Villa | 40 platinum |
| Mansion | 100 platinum |
When you have purchased a deed, simply drop it on top of the plot marker. If the plot marker disappeared when you purchased it, simply re-log to make it reappear.
With your new house built, you can now begin to customize the exterior if you so desire. Shift+Right-click the facade to bring up the exterior customization menu.
First, pressing the “Info” button will give you a quick overview your house’s purchased customizations, including your rent (yes, housing Dark Age of Camelot has rent). You can store four weeks of rent in your house’s lockbox.
On Eden, the Eden Bot will direct message you should your lockbox become empty. You can also use the “/payrent [realm] [type] [amount]” command to pay your rent without returning to your house, even across realms.
| HOUSE SIZE | RENT |
|---|---|
| Cottage | 50 gold per week |
| House | 100 gold per week |
| Villa | 200 gold per week |
| Mansion | 500 gold per week |
Rent can also be paid with Bounty Points by buying Bounty Rent Tokens from merchant NPCs located in each housing zone’s market.
Bounty Rent Tokens are 1:1 in gold value, meaning a “100 Bounty Rent Token” is worth 100 gold when it comes to paying rent.
Clicking “Garden” brings up a grid of available garden space and the garden store. Each item you place takes up one square on the grid.
Clicking “Store” brings up the house store where you can buy larger houses, guild transfer deeds if you want to make your personal house into a guild house and most importantly: The porch deed and consignment merchant.
Applying a porch deed to your house adds a porch to the side of your house (as one might expect), which will in turn allow you to place down a consignment merchant.
Consignment merchants are Dark Age of Camelot’s version of the auction house feature in other MMOs. Without one, you cannot passively sell items to other players. Drop the consignment merchant on the porch and he will appear and stand there no matter if there’s rain, snow, thunder or heat, and sell your old Molvik gear.
To put gear up for auction, right-click the consignment merchant to open the Player Merchant window. Drag and drop an item you wish to sell on an open slot and set your asking price in the window that appears. Holding shift will increase or decrease the number in increments of ten.
On Eden you can also use the “/setprice [slot] [price]” command to type in your desired price if spamming left-click gets tedious.
Entering your house, you will once again be able to shift+right-click in order to bring up the interior menu.
Like with the exterior menu, you will be able to customize the interior here. The “Store” button will bring up the internal store menu where you can directly buy decorations. To place decorations, simply drop them where you want to place them.
If a confirmation window appears asking if you are sure you wish to drop this item, then you cannot place the decoration there.
Once you have placed a decoration, you can shift+right-click on it to bring up a menu to rotate it.
If you have found a cool weapon, you can even place a copy of it directly onto the wall from your inventory.
In the middle of the interior menu is that “Hookpnts” button, which will display your house’s hook points in the form of small white circles. These allow you to place down NPCs such as merchants, vault keepers, teleporters and more, as well as forges, vaults and a bind stone.
| SIZE | MERCHANTS | TOOLS | VAULTS | BIND STONE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cottage | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| House | 4 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| Villa | 5 | 3 | 4 | 1 |
| Mansion | 6 | 3 | 8 | 1 |
Right-click a hook point to bring up the hook point store. The items available in the store will vary depending on which hook point you clicked.
Lastly, on the bottom of the interior menu are the “Access” and “Friends” buttons.
In the Access window you can customize permissions for each level of access.
In order to add someone as a house friend, use the “/housefriend [all / player / account / guild / guildrank]” command. Once they have been added, set their level of access with the left and right buttons next to their name.
